Ada was on her way to Amberley, enjoying the scenery and realising, rather to her surprise, that she was looking forward to seeing the cottage again. Her carpet bag was in the luggage rack above her head, with two stout carrier bags, a can of ginger beer and carton full of sandwiches inside it, it was warm and sunny, a good day for a country walk, and she had everything planned down to the last little detail.

‘This won’t take me long,’ she’d promised Nora as she left the flat. ‘I’ll be back in time for supper.’

‘I’ll have it ready for you,’ Nora said and hugged her. ‘Have fun!’

And now here she was, with the train pulling into Amberley station, and only a relatively short walk between her and her neglected belongings. It was all going to be easy-peasy.

She was the only passenger to get out at the station, which felt odd after the crowds she’d been living among in London, and the only person walking up the road towards the village too. But she strode out happily, past the turning to the Museum and the long stretch of Foxleigh Barn, plodded up New Barn Road and turned left just as she remembered Melanie had done when she drove her there, past the little Primary School, looking very empty, and into the village itself and up Church Street. There were no wisteria flowers on the cottage walls – bit too late in the year for that – but otherwise the place was unchanged, the same thatched roofs, the same quaintness, even the same neighbours, calling ‘Hello!’ to her. It was almost like coming home.

What’s the time? she thought and checked her watch. Half past ten. OK. I’ll pack everything up first and then I’ll have my sandwiches and my ginger beer and then I might make a pot of tea – if there’s any milk in that fridge. And she put her key in the lock.
